Toddler Nutrition Guidelines

Graham eats a varied diet that includes lots of whole grains, fruit, veggies and dairy. I thought it would be interesting to see what the American Dietetic Association says that he SHOULD be eating every day.

Grains: 3 ounces/day, with half of those grains being whole grains
Vegetables: 1 cup/day
Fruits: 1 cup/day, concentrate on whole fruits rather than juices
Milk: 2 cups/day Now that he's two, I can switch him to 2%
Meat and Beans: 2 ounces/day
oils: less than 3 teaspoons per day

A quick way to estimate kids' serving sizes is to figure one tablespoon per year. So, for Graham, 2 Tablespoons of applesauce would be 1 serving of fruit.

ivillage breaks it down by servings:
fruits and veggies: 4 servings
milk, cheese or yogurt: 2-3 servings
grains: 4 servings
protein: 2 servings

This week I will try to make sure I am incorporating these guidelines into his diet (I think we do pretty good) and post some our daily meals.
